Some excursions are being offered at an additional cost to the conference and have a limited number of participants. These sponsored excursions occur during the conference programming; minors must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must register in advance for these paid excursions - registration for excursions will close once they have reached capacity or June 1st, 2019. See more details below! Come kick off ChemEd 2019 with a walking tour to Starbucks Reserve to learn about different brewing methods that Starbucks uses for their coffee! Based on participant interest, we will sample siphon and/or clover brewing with our very own barista. Brewing techniques may include siphon brewing, pour-over brewing, Chemex brewing, and coffee press brewing! Click here for their Brewing 101 release.
Meet at the Starbucks Reserve coffee house at 7:15 AM or walk together as a group from the lower floor of Wentz Science Center (southwest door) at 6:45 AM. (*Rob Bober will be the walking guide from the Wentz Science Center.)

Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory
What are we made of? How did the universe begin? What secrets do the smallest, most elemental particles of matter hold, and how can they help us understand the intricacies of space and time?
Since 1967, Fermilab has worked to answer these and other fundamental questions and enhance our understanding of everything we see around us. As the United States' premier particle physics laboratory, we do science that matters. We work on the world's most advanced particle accelerators and dig down to the smallest building blocks of matter. We also probe the farthest reaches of the universe, seeking out the nature of dark matter and dark energy.
Fermilab's 1,750 employees include scientists and engineers from all around the world. Fermilab collaborates with more than 50 countries on physics experiments based in the United States and elsewhere.

Historic Naperville Trolley Tour
Learn about old Naperville, and see the new Naperville! This one-hour Historic Trolley Tour of Naperville blends the past with the present, highlights Naperville's growth, and includes some fun stories! The tour includes Naperville's Historic District, North Central College, charming downtown businesses and shopping areas, state-of-the-art police and fire stations, the scenic Riverwalk, Naper Settlement, and more!

*In order to enter Argonne National Laboratory, participants (both US and non US citizens) will need to complete an online "identification-check" by July 1st. After confirmation of acceptance, participants MUST bring proper identification to the lab on the day of the trip and have that identification handy to show to their security.
American Science & Surplus Store
American Science & Surplus was established in about 1937. At that time the founder, Mr. Al Luebbers, was working for Western Electric, here in Chicago. After the Second World War the company expanded, fed by war surplus. Eventually, Al opened a retail store on Chicago's Northwest side called American Science Center and started carrying educational science items.
American Science & Surplus continues to offer a unique mix of industrial, military and educational items, with an emphasis on science and education. We supply a wide range of unusual and hard to find items (some say bizarre stuff) to the hobbyist, tinkerer, artist, experimenter, home educator, do-it-yourselfer, and bargain hunter.
We offer an eclectic range of products, many with a science or educational tilt to them, others simply handy or amusing. Value is important, and whenever we can, we carry surplus at prices well below retail. We love closeouts, inventory overruns, mis-manufactures, and items whose time has not come.

Naperville, Chicago, and the Chicagoland area is brimming with things to do and places to go. When you arrive at ChemEd 2019, you will be provided with a welcome bag (complements of the Naperville Chamber of Commerce). This bag will include brochures (and potential discounts) for Naperville merchants and activities. Find some of the nearby places that you can explore, on your own, below!
Naperville Riverwalk (~0.6 mile from campus) FREE
Naperville's crown jewel! The Riverwalk is a place of beauty and tranquility along the West Branch of the DuPage River. It features 1.75 miles of brick paths, fountains, bridges, meeting and event places, outdoor sculpture and artwork, recreational facilities, and celebratory memorials. The Riverwalk is a preferred destination and an ideal place to stroll, unwind and reflect. Come relax and enjoy the scene. The Riverwalk has something for everyone. Best of all, it’s a place to be enjoyed for generations to come.
Dupage Children's Museum (<0.5 mile from campus)
With more than 30 years under its belt, Dupage Children's Museum has been inspiring families to laugh, learn, and love spending time together. Through exhibits, programs, and special events, every experience is designed to help children develop a strong foundation of creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills, and confidence – strengths that help them grow to become resilient, innovative, life-long learners.
Naper Settlement (~0.5 mile from campus)
Naper Settlement is a family-friendly outdoor history museum featuring 12 acres of learning and interactive opportunities for all ages. Located in downtown Naperville, Naper Settlement is just steps away from dining, shopping and the Riverwalk. Visitors will be immersed in history as they learn about the past and how it relates to the present, from pioneer times to today. Highlights include special events and programs and activities year-round, both on- and off-site.
Centennial Beach (~0.7 mile from campus)
Jump into summer as you swim in Centennial Beach’s historic stone quarry. It’s not a swimming pool, it’s not a lake, but a swimming experience like no other! Wade into the zero-depth entry and swim to depths of 15 feet.
For generations, Centennial Beach has been the local “swimming hole” for many Naperville residents and its guests. It’s a great place to simply relax and enjoy.

Cantigny Park (~7 miles from campus - Wheaton, IL)
Cantigny is a 500-acre (2.0 km ) park in Wheaton, Illinois. It is the former estate of Joseph Medill and his grandson Colonel Robert R. McCormick, publishers of the Chicago Tribune, and is open to the public. Cantigny includes large formal and informal gardens, two museums (including an iconic tank park featuring 100 years of armor), a 27-hole golf course, a picnic grove, a playground, hiking paths, restaurants and a gift shop.
Brookfield Zoo (~23 miles from campus - Brookfield, IL)
The 216-acre zoo features Italian provincial buildings & formal malls. It has more than 2,500 specimens comprising some 425 species. Special attractions include the dolphin shows in the Seven Seas exhibit, a children’s zoo, and Tropic World, a vast enclosed exhibit of mixed species from the three main rainforest habitats of the world (African, Asian, and South American). Other major exhibits are the Fragile Kingdom, depicting how animals relate to each other and their environment, and Habitat Africa, a two-part exhibit covering life in the rainforest and on the savanna.
You can drive or Uber/taxi there, but you can also get there via public transportation (metra train).
