Conference Guidelines

Social Media Guidelines:

ChemEd 2019 welcomes the use of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, blogs, etc) at our conference.  In order to make the conference a safe and comfortable space, we set forth the following guidelines for social media:

  • ChemEd 2019 is committed to respecting the dignity of others and to the civil and thoughtful discussion of new and opposing ideas on social media.  If you voice a complaint or disagree with a post, please do so in a polite and constructive manner.

  ​  

  • When tagging the ChemEd 2019 conference, use our twitter handle @ChemEd2019, or the conference hashtag (#ChemEd2019).  We ask that you do not post material that is harassing, abusive, or discriminatory to any other person.

   ​

  • Please keep your posts relevant to the conference/chemistry/education, and don't post on our pages or tag us to promote unrelated businesses, causes, or political candidates.  ChemEd 2019 reserves the right to report and/or remove any comments/tweets that are not relevant, discriminatory, etc.

  • Keep in mind ChemEd 2019's Conference Participation Code of Conduct (see below) and apply it to your communication online (and in person!).

   ​

  • While the default assumption is to allow open discussion of presentation on social media, please respect any request by a presenter to not disseminate the contents of their talk/workshop.

  • If you are presenting and do not want certain presentation slides shared on social media, the icon to the right may be used on slides to indicate your preference.  Please include the icon on each slide you wish not to be shared to ensure your preference is known to any participants that enter the presentation after its commencement.  You can download a high res .jpg of the icon here.

Conference Participation Code of Conduct:

Physical Safety:

Safety. Safety. Safety.  Physical safety is something each of us think about every time we step into a lab, and this conference is no different.  All participants are required to sign, and follow, North Central College's Safety Contract.  You will be asked to sign the Safety Contract at check-in, but you can view/read the contract here.  Laboratory rooms in the Wentz Science Center must not be overcrowded, if you arrive at a workshop and the room is full, please find another session to attend.  Additionally, a reminder for everyone, if you see unsafe laboratory conditions, immediately inform the person or persons at risk and/or report to a North Central College employee or ChemEd 2019 staff member.   North Central College is a smoke & tobacco free campus.

Goal:

ChemEd 2019 is dedicated to providing a safe and productive experience at all sponsored events for all conference participants, regardless of sex, color, gender, personal appearance, national origin, religion, age, physical disability, mental disability, perceived disability, medical condition, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, or any other basis protected by federal or applicable state labs or local ordinances.  Participation in events sponsored by ChemEd 2019 is subject to compliance with the terms and conditions of the ChemEd Conference Participation Code of Conduct.  As set forth in the Code, ChemEd is committed to providing a harassment-free environment for all participants and does not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.  ChemEd reserves the right to deny entry to its events, remove from events, or otherwise sanction any person or persons in ChemEd 2019's sole reasonable discretion, pursuant to the procedures set forth in the Code.

Prohibited Conduct:

Prohibited conduct at ChemEd 2019 includes, but is not limited to:

  1. harassment based on sex, race, color, personal appearance, national origin, religion, age, physical disability, mental disability, perceived disability, medical condition, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, or any other basis protected by federal or applicable state laws or local ordinances;

  2. demeaning comments or harassment about a person’s professional status or qualifications;

  3. sexual harassment

  4. abusive conduct that has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with another person’s ability to benefit from and enjoy or participate in the conference, including social events related to the conference and sponsored by ChemEd 2019;

  5. undue interruption of any speaker or session; and

  6. violence or threats of violence.

Reporting Prohibited Conduct:

What to do if you experience or witness inappropriate conduct at ChemEd 2019:

  1. Report such conduct immediately to the ChemEd 2019 Committee via Conference@ChemEd2019.com or 847-701-4275.  

    • If possible, write everything down (times, places, nature of the incident, and comments made).

    • Save emails, notes, etc.

    • Be as detailed as possible.  

    • ChemEd 2019 will make every effort to maintain the confidentiality of any supporting documentation.

  2. ChemEd 2019 cannot address claimed inappropriate conduct or harassment unless the claims are brought to the attention of the ChemEd 2019 Committee.  Event participants are encouraged to report any incidents as quickly as such participant feels safe doing so.

  3. ChemEd 2019 is committed to taking all reasonable steps to prevent harassment and prohibited conduct at its conference, and will make every reasonable effort to promptly and completely address and correct any prohibited conduct that may occur at a ChemEd 2019 Conference. 

  4. Anyone experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to public safety at the ChemEd 2019  conference is advised to call the police.

Investigation/Action:

ChemEd 2019 can investigate situations that arise at the ChemEd 2019 and in ChemEd 2019-sponsored online communities provided in connection with such conference.

If ChemEd 2019 determines that an individual has engaged in prohibited conduct, ChemEd 2019 shall determine the appropriate action to be taken, which may include, but is not limited to:

  • private reprimand;

  • removal from the conference without warning or refund;

  • implementation of conditions upon attendance at future ChemEd conferences; or

  • restriction from attendance at future ChemEd conferences.

ChemEd 2019 may, but is not required to, report any incident to proper authorities, including but not limited to law enforcement, if in ChemEd 2019's sole discretion such reporting is advisable or necessary.  

Retaliation for complaints of inappropriate conduct or harassment are also considered harassment and will not be tolerated.  Retaliatory behavior in connection with ChemEd 2019 conference will be investigated in a similar manner to initial complaints.
